EV charger installation starts at the switchboard
Most of the work in an EV charger installation happens before the charger goes on the wall. We look at your switchboard, your incoming supply and where the car parks. Then we put the charger where the cable reaches without a trip hazard across the driveway.
If your board is old or full, it may need work first. Our switchboard upgrades page explains what that involves.
What's included
- A site check of your switchboard and supply before we quote
- A dedicated circuit with its own RCBO protection
- Mounting and connecting the wall charger, inside the garage or outside and weather-rated
- Setting up load management, so the charger and the oven don't trip the main switch together
- Testing, a CCEW (the NSW Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work), and a walk-through of the app
EV charger installation cost
Demo figures: for most Newcastle homes, a 7kW single-phase wall charger costs $1,200 to $2,200 to install, plus the charger itself.
The charger is the part people price first and the cheapest part to get right. The cable run, a spare place on the switchboard and whether you're on single or three-phase power decide most of the cost. That is why we look before we quote. The quote is free, and the electrician cost guide has prices for other common jobs.
Brands we fit
We install the common Australian-approved wall chargers and can work with the one your car dealer recommended. If you haven't bought one yet, we'll tell you which ones suit your switchboard and your solar.
Charging with solar
If you have rooftop solar, a solar-aware charger can soak up daytime export that would otherwise go back to the grid for a few cents. We set it up so the car charges from the panels first and the grid second.
