Residential Electrician Newcastle

Newcastle's older streets went up over a long stretch of time, and the wiring inside the houses shows it. We drive up from Charlestown to homes from the CBD and Cooks Hill out to Hamilton, Merewether and Kotara, and every quote is free.

Terraces off Darby Street, where an old switchboard or a meter panel shared with next door is the usual starting point.

Working across Newcastle

In an older city the job is rarely just the job. The wiring behind the wall decides the price.

Cooks Hill is a heritage conservation area, and the City of Newcastle puts its key period of significance at about 1850 to 1940. Hamilton has heritage precincts of its own, among them the Hamilton Residential Precinct and the Hamilton South 'Garden Suburb'. Newcastle also has more shared walls than Lake Macquarie: the 2021 Census counted 16.2% of the city's occupied dwellings as semis, terraces or townhouses, with flats and apartments another 14.2%. More of our Newcastle jobs involve a neighbour's wall, a shared meter panel or a strata manager.

  1. Heritage streets

Cooks Hill and Hamilton, where new circuits go through old walls and we talk through where a new fitting will show before it goes up.

  2. Terraces and townhouses

Shared walls and sometimes a shared meter panel, so we work out what is yours before we quote and plan around the people next door.

  3. By the beach and inland

Merewether and Bar Beach by the ocean, Kotara further inland. All of it is under half an hour from our Charlestown base.

What we do here

Electrical work in Newcastle

  • Switchboard Upgrades

In an older house the board is usually the first thing we open. A new one puts safety switches on every circuit, quoted line by line before we start.

    Switchboard Upgrades →
  • EV Charger Installation

A terrace with street parking is a different job from a house with a garage. We look at where the car sits and what the board can carry before we price a charger.

    EV Charger Installation →
  • Ceiling Fan Installation

Older homes can have tall ceilings that need a longer downrod and a solid fixing. We fit new fans or swap one onto an existing light point.

    Ceiling Fan Installation →
  • Level 2 Electrician

Moving a meter box during a renovation, or taking an overhead line underground, done by the crew that rewires the rest of the house.

FAQ

Newcastle: common questions

Which Newcastle suburbs do you work in?

The ones within half an hour of our Charlestown base: the CBD, Cooks Hill, Bar Beach, Merewether, Hamilton and Kotara, and the streets between them. If you're north or west of Hamilton, ring before you book and we'll say honestly whether the drive works.

Do you have a page for my Newcastle suburb?

Merewether has one. The other Newcastle suburb pages are still being written, so for now this page covers the rest of the area. The work, the prices and the free quote are the same whichever of these suburbs you live in.

We live inside a Newcastle heritage area. Is rewiring still allowed?

Yes. Rewiring inside the house and replacing the switchboard are everyday electrical jobs. If the work would change the front of the house, such as moving the meter box or adding a light on the street side, ask the City of Newcastle whether heritage controls apply before it goes ahead. We point out at the quote anything that will show from the street.

I live in a terrace with a shared wall. Is that a problem?

No, but it changes the plan. We check which meter, board and cables belong to your side, keep drilling and power-offs to the hours we agreed, and if a meter panel is shared we arrange any shutdown so next door isn't caught without power.

Do you work in Newcastle units and strata buildings?

Yes. Most jobs inside your own unit only need your go-ahead. Anything on common property, like the main switchroom or a shared meter panel, should be cleared with your strata manager first, and we're happy to talk to them for you.

How soon can you reach a Newcastle job?

From Charlestown, under half an hour to anywhere on our Newcastle list. In business hours that usually means we're at an emergency within the hour, and for anything else the quote tends to come back the day you send the job.
