The guide

Short answer (demo figures): most Newcastle electricians charge a call-out fee of around $80 to $150, then roughly $90 to $130 an hour. Small jobs like a new power point usually land between $150 and $300 all up. Bigger jobs get a fixed quote before any work starts.

Demo figures. Tallowood is fictional, and so is this table: on a client's site it is their own price list, which is what makes a post like this rank and convert. Real prices vary with access, the age of the wiring and what's already in the wall.

Electrician hourly rate

Demo figures: most Newcastle electricians charge roughly $90 to $130 an hour in business hours. An apprentice working alongside is billed at less, and after hours or weekends usually cost one and a half to two times the standard rate.

The hourly rate only matters for jobs nobody can price in advance, like tracking down a fault. Anything that can be seen and measured, from a power point to a new switchboard, should get a fixed quote instead, so the time it takes is the electrician's problem, not yours.

Electrician call out fee

The call-out fee covers getting a licensed electrician and a stocked van to your door. Most include the first 15 to 30 minutes on site. Ask what yours includes before you book, because it's the part that varies most between businesses.

At Tallowood the call-out fee only applies to emergencies and fault-finding, where nobody knows what's wrong until they look. Quotes are free, with no obligation.

What a call-out fee should include

Before you agree to one, check:

  • Time on site. How many minutes are included before the hourly rate starts.
  • Travel. Whether your suburb is inside the standard area or charged extra.
  • Diagnosis. Whether finding the fault is part of the fee, or billed on top.
  • Small parts. Whether a fuse, a connector or a fitting from the van is included.

After hours and emergencies

An emergency electrician on a Sunday night costs more than a Tuesday morning visit, often double the standard rate. If the job can safely wait until business hours, it will cost you less. If there's a burning smell, sparks or no power, don't wait: ring. Most electricians will tell you over the phone whether it's safe to leave until morning.

Typical prices for common jobs

Job Typical range
New double power point $150 – $300
Each extra power point, same visit $80 – $150
LED downlights, supply and install, per light $60 – $120
Ceiling fan installation, existing wiring $150 – $300
Smoke alarm, hardwired, per alarm $120 – $220
Safety switch, added to an existing board $250 – $450
Switchboard upgrade $1,500 – $3,000
EV charger installation, excluding the charger $1,200 – $2,200
Full rewire, three-bedroom house $8,000 – $15,000

Ceiling fans are the job people ask about most. Our ceiling fan installation page has the full breakdown, from a swap onto an existing light point to a new point with its own switch.

The two biggest jobs on the list have their own pages: switchboard upgrades and EV charger installation.

What makes a job cost more

  • Access. A low roof space, a two-storey wall or a concrete slab all add time.
  • Old wiring. Finding the original rubber-insulated cable in a 1950s house turns a quick job into a careful one.
  • The switchboard. If there's no room for a new circuit, the board may need work first.

Safety switch and smoke alarm costs

A safety switch cuts the power in a fraction of a second when current leaks to earth, which is what stops an electric shock. Plenty of older Newcastle homes have one safety switch covering the power points and none on the lights. Adding more to a board with space is a small job. A board still on ceramic fuses usually needs replacing to take them.

Hardwired smoke alarms cost more than the battery kind because they're wired into the lighting circuit and linked together, so one going off sets off the rest. For a rental, the landlord has to keep the alarms working, and many book a check between tenants.

Rewiring an older house

A full rewire is the biggest job most homeowners ever pay an electrician for. It is rarely the first thing we suggest. In most older houses a few circuits are the problem, often the ones added in an extension or by a previous owner. Testing the insulation tells you which circuits need replacing and which still have years left in them.

Signs it's worth having the wiring tested: lights that flicker when an appliance starts, a power point that feels warm, or cable with cloth or black rubber insulation in the roof space. A test costs far less than waiting for one of those to fail.

How to save on electrical work

  • Bundle the small jobs. One visit for the fan, two power points and the outside light costs less than three visits.
  • Send photos first. A photo of the board and the spot often gets you a firm price without a site visit.
  • Plan before you renovate. Running cable before the plasterboard goes up costs a fraction of chasing it into finished walls.

How to get an accurate quote

Send photos of your switchboard and the spot where the work is going. A good electrician will tell you from those whether they can give you a firm price or need to see it first. Send us the photos and we'll come back with a free quote, usually the same day.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a typical electrician call out fee in Newcastle?

Demo figures, for a fictional business: most Newcastle electricians charge a call-out fee of about $80 to $150 during business hours. It usually covers travel and the first part of the first hour. After-hours and weekend callouts cost more.

How much does an electrician charge per hour?

Demo figures: most Newcastle electricians charge roughly $90 to $130 an hour in business hours, on top of the call-out fee. After hours and weekends usually cost one and a half to two times that. Quoted jobs are a fixed price, so the hourly rate only matters for fault-finding and small jobs.

Do electricians charge for quotes?

Some do, especially for a site visit. Tallowood doesn't: quotes are free with no obligation. The call-out fee only applies to emergencies and fault-finding, where nobody knows what's wrong until they look.

Is it cheaper to bundle electrical jobs?

Usually, yes. The call-out and travel are paid once, and each extra power point or light on the same visit costs less than the first. If you have a list of small jobs, send it all at once.

How much does a safety switch cost to install?

Demo figures: adding a safety switch to a board that has room for it usually costs $250 to $450. If the board is old or full, it may need an upgrade first, which is a bigger job.

How much does it cost to rewire a house in Newcastle?

Demo figures: a full rewire of a three-bedroom house usually costs $8,000 to $15,000, depending on roof access, the number of circuits and whether the walls are plaster or fibro. A partial rewire of the worst circuits costs less.
