Merewether Ocean Baths opened in 1935, and the City of Newcastle calls them the largest ocean baths complex in the Southern Hemisphere. The Bathers Way coastal walk starts there and runs 6km north to Nobbys Beach, and the beach itself hosts the Surfest surfing competition.
Behind the sand the housing is mixed. In the 2021 Census, 60.9% of Merewether's occupied dwellings were separate houses, flats and apartments made up 19.7%, semis, terraces and townhouses 19.2%, and a third of households (33.3%) rented.
Most callouts here come back to one of two things. On the streets nearest the beach it's corrosion: outdoor lights that flicker after a southerly, a deck power point that trips the safety switch once salt gets into it, a garage door motor that stops halfway.
Further up the hill toward Merewether Heights the homes are bigger and newer, and the work is lighting, pool equipment and EV chargers. In between are the older weatherboard and brick cottages, many of them rentals now, where a yearly smoke alarm check and a look at the switchboard keeps both the landlord and the tenant covered.
